Tabitha Chawinga: The Malawi striker shining in China

Malawi and Jiangsu Suning striker Tabitha Chawinga has dominated the Chinese Women’s Super League since joining in 2018.

After winning the Golden Boot in the Swedish Women’s League with Kvarnsvedens IK in 2017, Chawinga moved to China for what was reportedly for a record-breaking transfer fee in Swedish women’s football.

She helped Jiangsu win the league for the first time since 2019, with the 24-year-old striker leading the goal-scoring charts and winning the Player of the Season award.

According to Goal.com, the powerful frontwoman bagged 38 goals in all competitions in a season that is still under review due to the advent of coronavirus.

The Malawi international also made a wonderful bit of history, as she became the first player to score in the maiden women’s Asia club tournament, in which she ended as the top scorer in the Women’s FA Cup with 23 goals in 12 appearances.

In a historic season for the club, who went onto win four trophies in one season, Chawinga will hope to continue shining the light in China with her goal-scoring exploits.
