MLS: Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah wins Defender of the season at club

Black stars defender Jonathan Mensah was named Columbus Crew SC defender of the season at the club’s annual awards night

The U20 World Cup winner was ever present throughout the MLS season for his club which was hampered by injuries

Jonathan Mensah made 24 appearances throughout the season with 23 starts for Columbus Crew SC during the MLS regular season providing the back line of the club with series of man of the match performances

The defender led the club with 109 clearances, 62 header clearances and 72 aerial duels won throughout the regular season despite not featuring in some of the club’s season games due to injuries

Jonathan Mensah played a remarkable 2,151 minutes of regular season football for Columbus Crew throughout the season more than any of the club’s defenders in 2019

With the award Jonathan joins Brad Friedel (1996,1997) and Chad Marshall (2008,2009,2010 and 2013) as one of the players in the club’s history to have won the award more than once and became the first player since Chad Marshall to have won the award in consecutive years
