GUSA GAMES: University of Ghana Students Try Their Own Version of Video Assistant Referee
The University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS) Multi Media team tried the implementation of their own version of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the ongoing GUSA games.
With just five cameras and a drone the adventurous students transferred the knowledge acquired in the classroom to help referees officiate the game between Legon and UMAT.
VAR is a match official in association football who reviews decisions made by the head referee. Following extensive trialing in a number of major competitions, VAR was finally written into the Laws of the game by the International Football Association Board in 2018.
It has since been adopted by Football Associations in Europe, South America, el al but most Associations in Africa are yet to buy into the idea.
This is the first time something of its semblance has been used in Ghana Football and the students might have taken inspiration from the numerous decisions deemed to be unfair in this year’s GUSA games.
