CAF CONFEDERATION CUP: Ashantigold vs RS Berkane Preview

Ashanti Gold will play host to RS Berkane of Morocco in the CAF Confederation Cup first leg at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

After returning to continental action for the first time since 2016, the Miners increase in greed and collective growth is what seems to be driving them all the way. They defeated Akonangui fc of Equatorial Guinea 4-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round. A first half hat-trick by skipper Shafiu Mumuni did the magic.

Largely, Ghanaian clubs don’t really have good records against North African clubs but Shafiu Mumuni believes they have what it takes to win the game convincingly to ensure that the return leg will be a mere formality:

“We the playing body are aware that the game won’t be that easy, therefore we are preparing very well to ensure we beat RS Berkane massively as we did to Akonangui (3-0 win) in order not to straggle in the return leg”.

RS Berkane were last season’s finalists but lost to Zamalek on penalties and will love to replicate that feat. The Oranges, as they are affectionately called arrives in Ghana a few days ago, thus far ahead of time (unlike Akonangui fc who landed just a day to the match) perhaps to acclimatize with the weather.

In terms of recent form Ashgold has a superior advantage as compared to RS Berkane. The Miners lifted the BK Edusei Cup at the expense of Asante Kotoko and thumped Tema Youth 4-0 in a friendly.

RS Berkane has won just a game in their last five competitive matches.

Kickoff time for today’s match is 3pm.
