Sadat Iddrisu Among Six Division One League centre-backs available for Ghana Premier League Clubs

In some ways, the Division One League is a world unto itself. Somewhere no player truly wants to be. Every club, with just a few exceptions, is desperately scrambling to get out. The Premier League, full of recognition, acclaim and prestige, looms tantalisingly close

Whether through achieving a promotion or earning a move, most players are understandably desperate to make the step up. For some, it proves a bridge too far, but there are several who already seem destined to end up there, one way or another.

Kickgh.com has looked at which centre-backs could be on the move when the 2020/21 season is finally able to be drawn to a conclusion.

 

Vitus Yamoah (Planners Athletic)

To land the Planners captain, clubs would probably have to break the bank. But if there’s a player in the second-tier worth spending on, it might well be Vitus Yamoah.

Yamoah has everything required to go down as one of the all-time great defenders in this history of Ghana football. He’s confident and composed on the ball, aerially dominant and he reads the game well.

 The Dunkwa-on-Offin born centre-back is a force to be reckoned with in either box and is comfortable playing out from the back.

Sadat Iddrisu (Nkoranza Warriors)

Powerfully built, composed on the ball and dominant off it, Iddrisu has everything needed to succeed in the Ghanaian top-flight. He likes to get the ball on the ground and carry it into midfield.

He actually started out in football as a midfielder before slotting into defence, which is perhaps why his calmness under pressure when in possession is up there with the best in the business.

 Iddrisu is more than an easy on the eye defender though and his positional sense, strength and aerial prowess makes him a tough man to get the better of. He’s won three MVPs so far in the league.

Maxwell Agyemang (Mighty Royals FC)

Defending is typically a functional pursuit; the aim is to quite literally stop other people realising the principal objective of football. Unlike most, Agyemang is a defender you would actually want to watch.

The defender is an aesthetic joy, marrying natural style with an oft-overlooked level of substance. 

Agyemang is a technically gifted defender who is quick across the turf, which, although he’s no pushover himself, makes him a superb candidate to play alongside a more dominating partner. On top of his ability as a player, Agyemang is known to have a phenomenal temperament.

John Asmah (Skyy FC)

The 29-year-old is one of the reasons why Skyy FC are topping the Zone One. Physically brave almost to the point of foolishness, crunching in the tackle, a fine passer with both feet, brilliant positionally, the on-pitch symbol of Malik Mohammed’s brilliant Skyy FC team.

His quickness over short areas is impressive, and while he can be aggressive at times, he is never out of control of his own actions. His defensive prowess and desire to win is undeniable.

Abeiku Ainoonson (Sekondi Hasaacas)

Ainoonson has proven himself wherever he has been and since moving to Hasaacas he’s transformed them from a flowing, attacking side to one that is still awesome going forward but now they’re tough to breakdown too.

The former New Edubiase and Kotoko man is so comfortable on the ball he almost makes the game look too easy but he’s more than capable of dealing with the ‘kick it, head it’ side of the game as well. 

Evans Odoom (Nsoatreman FC)

The inclusion of Odoom this high up the list is proof that, no matter how the game has changed, defending is the most important thing for a defender. That isn’t to say Odoom is bad with the ball at his feet. He is all about power, aggression and tenacity with his ball winning ability – probably – second to none in the zone.

Nothing epitomises the solidity Odoom brings to a team than the fragility that Nsoatreman FC have shown without him at the heart of their back four. He’s been a block of granite at the back throughout the season so far, and will serve as the steady foundation on which they build in the years to come.
