STADIUM: Baba Yara Sports Stadium to be Shut Down for Major Renovation

This year’s President’s Cup between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak was called off after a heavy downpour rendered the pitch not fit for association football.

The unfortunate incident highlighted the bad nature of the Multipurpose Stadium which has not seen refurbishment since 2008.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has however revealed the stadium was supposed to be closed down for renovation but for Kotoko’s participation in Africa. The stadium is the home ground for the Porcupine Warriors and will be undergoing a major facelift for the first time in 11 years.

Plans are far ahead and the refurbishment will start immediately after Asante Kotoko’s campaign in the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium will host this weekend’s game between Kotoko and Etoile Du Sahel of Tunisia in the preliminary round of the CAF inter-club competitions.
